A complete and readable first edition showing significant age-related wear and handling. The decorative cloth boards display noticeable rubbing, edge wear and fraying, particularly at the spine ends and corners. Internally the pages remain generally clean with light age toning and occasional spotting; however, there is separation and weakness at the hinges with visible cracking to the internal joints. Despite its condition issues, the book remains complete and presents well as an increasingly scarce nineteenth-century military title.

How I Volunteered for the Cape and What I Did There is a rare nineteenth-century first-hand account by T. E. Fenn describing experiences in southern Africa during the frontier conflicts of the late Victorian period. Written from personal experience, the work combines military history with travel narrative, offering vivid descriptions of campaigning, military life and colonial South Africa. Contemporary accounts of this nature provide a fascinating perspective on the people, places and events of the period and remain sought after by collectors of military and imperial history.
