An original nineteenth-century regimental history of the 44th, or East Essex Regiment of Foot, tracing the regiment from its formation in 1741 through its subsequent service in Britain, North America, India and other theatres. Compiled by Thomas Carter, the work forms part of the long tradition of Victorian regimental histories and provides a detailed narrative of campaigns, officers, movements and honours associated with the regiment across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Of particular interest are the illustrated elements, including portraits, regimental colours and folding maps or plans, which add considerable value for collectors and researchers. As an original rather than a modern reprint, it will appeal to readers interested in British Army history, regimental studies, imperial warfare and the material culture of Victorian military publishing.
