A detailed study of General Louis Botha’s second invasion of Natal during the guerrilla phase of the Second Anglo-Boer War, focusing on the operations of September and October 1901.
Dermot Michael Moore traces the background to the expedition, beginning with peace negotiations and proclamations before examining the concentration of Boer commandos and Botha’s movement into Natal. Particular attention is given to the action at Blood River Poort on 17 September 1901, where Boer forces achieved a notable success against British troops.
Further chapters follow the advance towards Zululand, operations around Itala and Fort Prospect, the decision to withdraw, fighting at Geluk Gorge and the eventual conclusion of the expedition. The author also assesses the wider military significance of Botha’s campaign during the later stages of the war.
Published by the Historical Publication Society in Cape Town in 1979, this first edition contains 10 maps and 16 black-and-white illustrations, combining contemporary and later photographs with detailed tactical maps of the principal engagements.
A useful specialist account for collectors and researchers interested in Louis Botha, Boer commandos, the Natal theatre and the guerrilla phase of the Anglo-Boer War.
