Peter Fox’s Building and Collecting, edited by William Aslet, examines the artistic and architectural interests of Frederick Hervey, Bishop of Derry and fourth Earl of Bristol. Published as Volume 85 of The Walpole Society, the study explores the activities of an eighteenth-century patron whose ambitions extended across Britain, Ireland and continental Europe.
At its centre is a selection of more than 300 letters, transcribed with detailed editorial notes, concerning Hervey’s building projects and acquisition of works of art. The correspondence illuminates his dealings with artists, architects and agents, alongside the practical challenges of commissioning buildings and assembling a collection. His projects at Downhill, Ballyscullion and Ickworth provide an important focus.
An introductory study places the letters in the context of Hervey’s life, travels and collecting interests. Colour illustrations include portraits of Hervey and members of his family. Biographical notes, a bibliography and an index support use of the correspondence.
This substantial English-language hardback will interest readers researching Georgian architecture, country houses, collecting, patronage and the European art market.
