Condition
A solid and presentable copy for its age. The original red cloth binding shows expected wear, including rubbing, fading, and edge wear, with some marks and scuffing consistent with nineteenth-century use. Internally, the pages display age-related toning and foxing, most noticeable to the title and early leaves, but the text remains clear and fully legible throughout. The binding remains intact, and all pages are present. Overall, a well-preserved example of a scarce privately printed military journal.

A Journal of the Campaign in Flanders, A.D. 1708 is a rare and highly evocative first-hand military narrative of the War of the Spanish Succession, written by John Marshall Deane, a serving officer of the Foot Guards.
Covering the decisive Campaign of 1708, including the Battle of Oudenarde and the Siege of Lille, this privately circulated journal offers a vivid contemporary account of campaigning in Flanders under the Duke of Marlborough. Written from the perspective of a front-line participant, the text provides detailed observations on troop movements, battlefield conditions, command decisions, and the realities of early-eighteenth-century warfare.
Printed in 1846 and marked “Not Published”, this edition was produced for private circulation rather than the commercial book trade, significantly enhancing its desirability. The volume also includes a fold-out map of Czechoslovakia in September 1938 bound in, along with editorial material by Rev. John Bathurst Deane, adding further historical and documentary interest.
This is a compelling primary source for collectors of Marlborough-era material, early modern European warfare, and British military history, as well as an attractive acquisition for institutional or private libraries.
