A substantial scholarly study of the Yorkshire gentry during the crucial century between the English Reformation and the outbreak of the Civil War. Drawing extensively upon archival sources, J. T. Cliffe examines the social structure, landholding patterns, religious affiliations, economic fortunes and political development of Yorkshire's leading families during one of the most transformative periods in English history.

The work explores the rise and decline of prominent county families, the impact of recusancy and Puritanism, patterns of education and advancement, local government, and the gradual emergence of political divisions that contributed to the crisis of the 1640s. Particularly valuable is Cliffe's analysis of the relationship between local society and national politics, providing important insight into the regional foundations of the English Civil War.

Illustrated with plates and maps, including a large folding county map, this remains one of the standard academic studies of Yorkshire society in the late Tudor and early Stuart periods and is an important reference work for historians, genealogists and students of northern England.
