The Royalist Republic by Helmer J. Helmers explores how the execution of Charles I in 1649 resonated across Europe, focusing on how royalist propaganda and public opinion evolved in the Dutch Republic. Helmers argues that despite the Calvinist, republican character of the Dutch states, many Dutch intellectuals, pamphleteers, and publicists embraced and circulated a pro-Stuart discourse. He traces how royalist pamphlets, engravings, poems, dramas, and correspondence traveled across linguistic and political borders to shape an Anglo-Dutch public sphere. The book offers a richly interdisciplinary approach, weaving together literary, religious, and political threads to show how the Dutch engagement with Stuart royalism transforms our understanding of both Dutch intellectual culture and the reach of English Civil War politics.
