A substantial scholarly reference work examining the emblematic devices, mottoes and imagery displayed on military flags during the English Civil Wars and their immediate aftermath. Alan R. Young brings together material previously dispersed across numerous surviving manuscripts, documenting flags associated with Parliamentarian, Royalist, Covenanter and Irish Confederate forces.
The entries describe the flag or device, its colours and imagery, the accompanying motto and its translation, together with information about the bearer, regiment, political allegiance, date and documentary sources. Extensively illustrated throughout, the volume also includes a detailed introductory study, concordances, picture indexes and indexes of Latin, English, French, Italian and Spanish mottoes. An important and uncommon reference for students of the English Civil Wars, military flags, heraldry, political symbolism and seventeenth-century material culture.
