Trevor Royle’s comprehensive narrative history of the conflicts that engulfed England, Scotland and Ireland between 1638 and 1660. Beginning with the Scottish resistance to Charles I’s religious policies, Royle follows the Bishops’ Wars, the English Civil Wars, the Irish Confederate Wars and the campaigns of the New Model Army before examining the Commonwealth, Cromwellian Protectorate and Restoration. Political and religious developments are integrated with detailed accounts of campaigns, battles and the personalities who shaped the struggle. Illustrated with maps, portraits and black-and-white plates, this substantial volume provides a wide-ranging history of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
