Acceptable / reading-copy condition, with significant staining and binding wear.
The cloth covers show rubbing, fading, marks and wear to the edges and corners. Spine ends are frayed, with splitting along the outer joints. The inner hinges are cracked, exposing underlying binding material.
Pages have age-related tanning, foxing and staining, particularly heavy on the endpapers and some illustrated pages. Page edges are browned and marked. Folding-plan creases show staining and wear.
A handwritten gift inscription dated 28 June 1884 appears inside the front, together with pencil notes. The photographed text remains readable.
