A richly illustrated collection of essays, lectures, historical documents and archival material examining the Battle of Worcester of 3 September 1651, the final major battle of the English Civil Wars.
Published by the Battle of Worcester Society, this substantial collection brings together material produced over many years of research and commemoration of the battle. The contents incorporate lectures delivered at anniversary dinners between 1994 and 2012, together with articles and contributions drawn from Worcester Cathedral, local archives and other historians with specialist knowledge of the battle and its wider context.
The volume ranges widely across the military, political and local history of the campaign. Subjects include Charles II and the Royalist army, Cromwell and the Parliamentarian forces, Worcester’s role in the conflict, contemporary accounts of the battle, the city’s fortifications and surviving battlefield landscape.
Further essays explore individual personalities, buildings and collections associated with the battle, including Worcester Cathedral and its archives, the Commandery, Fort Royal, local churches and historic artefacts. The collection also considers the later memory and commemoration of Worcester 1651 and the battle's place within the history of the city.
The Battle of Worcester was fought on 3 September 1651 and ended in a decisive Parliamentarian victory over the Royalist forces of Charles II, effectively bringing the major military phase of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms to a close.
Extensively illustrated throughout with colour and black-and-white photographs, reproductions of paintings, portraits, historic documents and detailed maps, this is an especially useful local and military history reference for anyone interested in Worcester, Charles II, Oliver Cromwell and the final campaign of the English Civil Wars.
This is the 2012 first collected edition published by The Battle of Worcester Society.
