A collection of scholarly essays exploring major aspects of the English Revolution and published in honour of the distinguished historian Austin Woolrych. The contributors examine how the conflict was fought by soldiers, interpreted and defended by writers, and shaped—and ultimately failed—through the actions of statesmen. Subjects include the Irish Rebellion of 1641, Royalist printing, the iconography of revolution, casualties and the treatment of the wounded, local militias, military tactics and the administration of the Commonwealth. Edited by Ian Gentles, John Morrill and Blair Worden, with black-and-white photographic illustrations and a frontispiece portrait of Austin Woolrych.
