Rambles Round the Edge Hills and in the Vale of the Red Horse

Condition

Very good in good dust jacket. The dust jacket shows general shelf wear, rubbing and surface marking, with noticeable wear, small chips and creasing at the corners and spine ends. It is protected by a clear covering.

The boards and binding appear firm and secure. An earlier owner’s bookplate, dated July 1967, is attached to the front pastedown. Internally, the pages appear clean and bright, with the map, photographs and illustrations presenting well.

A richly illustrated local history of the villages and countryside surrounding Warwickshire’s Edge Hills and the Vale of the Red Horse.

Originally written by the Reverend George Miller, longtime Vicar of Radway, the book combines topographical description, local tradition, antiquarian observation and historical anecdote gathered from the communities along the Edge Hills. Miller explores settlements including Ratley, Upton, Warmington, Arlescote, Shotteswell, Farnborough, Burton Dassett, Avon Dassett, Kineton, Tysoe, Compton Wynyates and the surrounding hamlets.

The work is particularly useful for readers interested in the English Civil War, containing a chapter on the Battle of Edgehill as well as discussion of the landscape, roads, churches, manor houses and historic sites associated with the district. It also preserves local stories, dialect and traditions that had already begun to disappear by the time Miller was writing.

This 1967 Roundwood Press edition is the third edition, following the original 1896 edition and the expanded second edition of 1900. It includes a colour frontispiece/map, historical illustrations and black-and-white photographs of local landmarks and landscapes.
