Michael Kaiser presents a detailed academic study of the political and military leadership of the Catholic League during the early decades of the Thirty Years’ War. Focusing on Maximilian of Bavaria and the League commander Johann Tserclaes, Count Tilly, the work examines the interaction between political decision-making and military operations during one of Europe’s defining seventeenth-century conflicts.
The study analyses the organisational structures of the League, command relationships, military administration, communication, field operations and political strategy. Particular attention is given to Maximilian’s influence over military affairs and the balance between political objectives and battlefield realities. Drawing extensively on archival research and contemporary sources, this is a substantial contribution to scholarship on the Thirty Years’ War.
