An extensively illustrated study of Gottfried Heinrich zu Pappenheim, hereditary marshal of the Holy Roman Empire and one of the most prominent cavalry commanders of the Thirty Years’ War. The contributing historians examine Pappenheim’s family and the Franconian town bearing his name, his service to the Catholic League and Emperor, his role at the White Mountain, Magdeburg and Breitenfeld, and his fatal wounding at the Battle of Lützen in 1632. The volume also explores his relationship with Wallenstein, the origins of the celebrated phrase “Daran erkenn’ ich meine Pappenheimer,” and Pappenheim’s subsequent historical reputation. Illustrated with 142 predominantly colour portraits, paintings, engravings, documents, artefacts, archaeological material and photographs. German text.
