The inner hinges are cracked and exposed, bindings weakened but remain firm.
The endpapers are marked and age-toned and contain previous owners’ names and dated inscriptions, including the name Peter Young. Pencil marginal corrections, references and other annotations appear on a number of pages. First edition of John Roland Phillips’s important two-volume history of the English Civil War in Wales and the adjoining Marches, covering the period 1642–1649. Volume I presents a detailed narrative of the conflict, including military operations, sieges, political allegiances and the experiences of the Welsh counties and border regions. Volume II provides an extensive collection of contemporary source material, including letters, petitions, declarations, military reports and other documents illustrating the events described in the first volume. Published by Longmans, Green, and Co. in 1874, the work remains a valuable source for the study of the Civil War in Wales and the western border counties.
