The entry of the Scottish Covenanter army into the English Civil War in January 1644 radically altered the balance of power in northern England. With the Royalist army under the Marquis of Newcastle besieged in York, Prince Rupert undertook a daring march to relieve the city. On 2 July 1644 the opposing armies met at Marston Moor in one of the largest and most decisive battles of the war.
John Tincey examines the opposing commanders and armies, their organisation and battle plans, the campaign leading to Marston Moor, and the course and aftermath of the fighting. The Parliamentarian and Scottish victory, in which Cromwell’s cavalry played a decisive role, effectively ended Royalist control of northern England.
The book is extensively illustrated with full-colour battle artwork by Graham Turner, maps, three-dimensional battlefield views, contemporary illustrations and black-and-white photographs.
