In 1919, a diary written on the interleaved pages of William Lilly’s almanac Merlini Anglici Ephemeris was exhibited at the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne. It was identified as the 1648 diary of Major John Sanderson, an officer serving in Colonel Robert Lilburne’s Parliamentary regiment of horse.
Covering the period from 11 January to 30 December 1648, Sanderson’s approximately 270 diary entries provide a rare day-by-day record of the duties and experiences of a Parliamentary cavalry officer. Alongside references to major events, the diary records patrols, skirmishes, movements, expenses and the practical details of military service during the Second Civil War.
P. R. Hill and J. M. Watkinson supplement the edited diary with an examination of Sanderson’s family and military career, the northern campaign, Parliamentary cavalry organisation and the surviving manuscript. Appendices provide accounts, claims for expenses, contemporary documents, maps, itineraries and brief biographies.
