A complete four-volume facsimile edition of Samuel Rawson Gardiner’s authoritative History of the Commonwealth and Protectorate, covering the eventful period from the execution of Charles I in 1649 to the rule of the Major-Generals in 1656.

The work examines the establishment of the Commonwealth, Cromwell’s campaigns in Ireland and Scotland, the battles of Dunbar and Worcester, the First Anglo-Dutch War, Barebone’s Parliament and the creation and development of the Protectorate. Gardiner also considers Cromwell’s domestic, religious and foreign policies and the political difficulties that confronted the new regime.

Originally published in its four-volume form in 1903, Gardiner’s detailed narrative remains an important reference work for the study of the British Interregnum and Cromwellian government. This attractive Windrush Press facsimile edition includes maps and retains the pagination of the original edition. Offered here as the complete matching four-volume hardback set.
