First published in 1894, Alfred Kingston’s Hertfordshire During the Great Civil War and the Long Parliament is an important early county history of the English Civil War, tracing the political, military and social experience of Hertfordshire while also incorporating relevant events in Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire and Essex.
Kingston examines the build-up to conflict, the political and religious divisions within the county, the raising and movement of troops, Parliamentary and Royalist activity and the impact of war upon local communities. The narrative includes events at St Albans, Hertford, Royston, Watford and other Hertfordshire locations, together with accounts of military operations extending into neighbouring counties.
Particular attention is given to Hertfordshire’s position within the wider Parliamentary war effort, the activities of local gentry and clergy, military levies and taxation, religious controversy, the movements of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, and the county’s experience during both the First and Second Civil Wars. The work concludes with the later phases of the conflict and the political consequences of Parliament’s victory.
The volume includes a black-and-white frontispiece showing Cromwell arresting the High Sheriff in St Albans Market, after F. G. Kitton. The original edition was issued in red cloth with the gilt arms of Hertfordshire to the front board.
