Theodore Ayrault Dodge’s monumental study of Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden and the development of European warfare from the later Middle Ages through the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
Originally published in 1895 as part of Dodge’s celebrated Great Captains series, the work combines military biography with a broad history of the evolution of strategy, tactics, organisation and battlefield practice.
Dodge traces the revival of infantry and the changing relationship between cavalry, infantry and artillery before examining the rise of Sweden under Gustavus Adolphus. Particular attention is given to the Swedish king’s military reforms, organisation and tactical methods, his campaigns in Poland and his intervention in the Thirty Years’ War.
The narrative follows the Swedish campaigns in Germany in considerable detail, including the operations against Tilly and Wallenstein and major engagements such as Breitenfeld and Lützen. Dodge examines Gustavus’s command methods, army organisation and battlefield innovations alongside the political and strategic circumstances in which his campaigns were fought.
The scope of the work extends beyond Gustavus Adolphus himself, considering the subsequent development of European warfare and the campaigns of major commanders including Turenne, Condé, Prince Eugene and Marlborough. The original work was published in 1895 and comprised 864 pages.
The volume is extensively supported by historical maps, plans of battles, tactical diagrams and line illustrations, making it both a narrative military history and a substantial reference work on the development of early modern warfare.
This is the 1996 Greenhill Books hardback reprint in the Great Captains Series.
