Condition
Fair to good condition considering age. Both volumes are withdrawn ex-library copies and are offered without dust jackets. The original black cloth boards show general rubbing, fading, mottling and surface marking, with wear and bumping to the corners, edges and spine ends. The gilt spine lettering is dulled. There is a large library barcode label and clear tape around the lower spine of Volume I, while Volume II has conspicuous residue and surface loss from a removed spine label.
Library bookplates, stamps, withdrawal markings, shelf numbers and other institutional markings are present on the endpapers and preliminary pages. At least one internal hinge is cracked with the binding material visible, although the text blocks remain attached. The page edges are toned and marked, and occasional pencil ticks or annotations are visible, including on a contents page. The pages examined are otherwise generally clean. The folding material has not been fully collated. Please refer to the supplied photographs for the books’ exact condition.

Michael Roberts’s substantial two-volume study of Gustavus Adolphus and Sweden’s emergence as a major European power during the early seventeenth century. Covering the period from the king’s accession in 1611 to his death in 1632, the work examines Swedish government, diplomacy, economic and social development, military reform, the Baltic campaigns and Sweden’s decisive intervention in the Thirty Years’ War.
Illustrated with black-and-white portrait plates, maps, folding maps and a genealogical table. This set comprises Volume I, 1611–1626, in the 1962 second impression, and Volume II, 1626–1632, in the 1958 first edition.
