A substantial and richly illustrated German-Swedish study of Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, the Battle of Lützen and the development of the king’s posthumous reputation from his death in 1632 to the twenty-first century.

The contributing historians examine Sweden and Finland during the Thirty Years’ War, the Swedish intervention in Germany, the Battle of Lützen, battlefield archaeology and the weapons used during the engagement. Further chapters explore the portraits, medals, monuments, museums, religious institutions and commemorative traditions through which Gustav Adolf’s image was preserved and reshaped in Germany and Sweden.

Published as the companion volume to the 2007 exhibition at Museum Schloss Lützen. Extensively illustrated in colour and black and white with paintings, portraits, photographs, historical prints, maps, medals, clothing and museum objects. German text.
