A major scholarly biography of Emperor Ferdinand II, one of the defining figures of the Counter-Reformation and the Thirty Years War. Robert Bireley examines Ferdinand’s life and rule from his early position as territorial ruler of Inner Austria through to his election as Holy Roman Emperor, placing particular emphasis on the influence of Archduchess Maria, the centrality of Catholic reform, and the political tensions within the Habsburg court.

This study presents Ferdinand as a crucial figure in the consolidation of the Habsburg Monarchy and in the revival of imperial authority after the reigns of Rudolf II and Matthias. It explores the balance between religion, dynasty, war and statecraft, following the competing pressures between those who favoured consolidation of Habsburg power and those who sought expansion within the Empire.

A valuable work for readers interested in the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburgs, the Counter-Reformation, early modern Catholicism, Central European history and the Thirty Years War.
