A comprehensive scholarly biography of Ernst von Mansfeld, one of the most prominent mercenary commanders and military entrepreneurs of the early Thirty Years’ War.
Walter Krüssmann traces Mansfeld’s life from his origins as the natural son of a noble family through his military service, political alliances and campaigns against the Habsburg monarchy. The study examines his early career in the Spanish Netherlands, his connections with the Protestant Union and Calvinist cause, his recruitment and financing of mercenary armies, and his operations in Bohemia, the Palatinate and other theatres of the conflict.
Drawing extensively upon contemporary documentary sources, the book reassesses Mansfeld’s reputation and considers his role as both a commander and an independent military entrepreneur. Particular attention is paid to the organisation, financing and deployment of his forces, his relationships with European princes and governments, and his significance during the opening phases of the Thirty Years’ War.
