An illustrated study of the campaign culminating in Oliver Cromwell’s decisive victory over David Leslie’s Scottish army at Dunbar on 3 September 1650. Stuart Reid examines the political background, opposing commanders, armies and plans before tracing Cromwell’s invasion of Scotland, the manoeuvring around Edinburgh and the battle itself. Reid also considers whether Cromwell’s celebrated attack may originally have begun as an attempt to escape from an apparently trapped position. Campaign maps, three-dimensional battlefield views and specially commissioned colour artwork by Graham Turner explain the course and experience of the fighting. Osprey Campaign series, volume 142.
