Focusing on the human experience of the Thirty Years’ War, Sigrun Haude examines how individuals and communities attempted to survive violence, hunger, disease, poverty and displacement. Drawing upon extensive archival research and personal testimony, she explores the practical, psychological and spiritual resources used by people trying to understand and withstand the conflict.

The study moves beyond conventional narratives of military destruction to reveal a more varied picture of resilience, pragmatism, community support and religious belief. Particular attention is given to experiences in Bavaria and to the ways in which both women and men sought to limit the war’s damaging consequences. Illustrated with maps, graphs, tables and other figures.
