Condition
Good condition. An original 1823 quarter cloth binding with paper-covered boards. The boards show expected age-related wear, including rubbing, edge wear, creasing and some loss to the paper covering, particularly at the corners and fore-edge. The spine cloth remains intact and the binding is holding securely. There is a previous owner's inscription to the front board. Internally, the pages are complete with light to moderate foxing and age toning throughout, but remain clean and entirely readable. A sound, unrestored copy in honest original condition, displaying the expected wear associated with a book over 200 years old.

An early nineteenth-century edition of the celebrated contemporary account of the Siege of Lathom House during the English Civil War. The journal records the heroic defence of Lathom House in Lancashire by Charlotte de la Trémoille, Countess of Derby, against the Parliamentarian forces commanded by Sir Thomas Fairfax in 1644. This edition includes the text of the original journal together with The Retreat of the Stanley Family by the Rev. Thomas Stanley (written in 1662). An important primary source for the study of the Civil War in Lancashire and the history of the Stanley family.
