A richly illustrated archaeological study of the Battle of Wittstock, fought in Brandenburg on 4 October 1636 during the Thirty Years’ War.
The volume was produced to accompany the travelling exhibition of the same name and centres upon the discovery in 2007 of a mass grave containing the remains of 125 soldiers on the Wittstock battlefield. Archaeological and anthropological research into the burial provides a detailed picture of the soldiers’ origins, health, injuries, equipment and final experiences.
The wider chapters examine the course of the battle, military organisation, weapons and armour, camp life, medical treatment, religion, burial practices and the lives of soldiers and civilians during the conflict. Extensively illustrated in colour with archaeological finds, weapons, coins, maps, historical prints, battlefield material and reconstructions. German text.
