Early Modern Military Identities 1560–1639: Reality and Representation, edited by Matthew Woodcock and Cian O’Mahony, explores how soldiers and military culture were understood and represented during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Bringing together a range of scholarly essays, the volume examines how military identity was shaped by experience, politics, religion and literature during a period of profound military and social change.

Drawing on sources including letters, memoirs, military manuals, sermons, drama and visual culture, the contributors investigate how soldiers were portrayed both in reality and in contemporary cultural imagination. The book also considers how concepts such as honour, masculinity, class and nationality influenced perceptions of military service in early modern Europe.

This interdisciplinary collection provides valuable insight into the relationship between warfare, literature and society, offering new perspectives on how early modern soldiers understood their role and how they were represented by contemporaries.
