A major documentary study of the Orange-Nassau military reforms at the turn of the seventeenth century, presenting and analysing the Kriegsbuch of Count Johann VII of Nassau-Siegen (1561–1623), one of the most important surviving sources for the development of early modern European military theory and practice.

Edited by the distinguished military historian Werner Hahlweg, the volume brings together the writings, papers and military observations associated with Johann VII and his circle. These documents record the ideas behind the reforms developed by the Counts of Nassau during the Dutch struggle against Spanish rule and illuminate a period of fundamental change in European warfare.

The material encompasses military organisation, drill and discipline, infantry and cavalry tactics, formations and battle orders, fortification, weapons, artillery, siegecraft, camp arrangements and numerous practical aspects of campaigning. Johann's writings reflect the attempt to apply renewed study of Classical military theory to contemporary warfare and illustrate the development of the highly disciplined tactical system associated with Maurice of Nassau and his relatives.

The work is particularly valuable for its extensive reproduction of original manuscript material. Numerous illustrations include contemporary drawings of soldiers and weapons, tactical formations, battle arrangements, equipment, technical devices and other military subjects, together with manuscript facsimiles and folding plates.

The Historische Kommission für Nassau describes Johann's Kriegsbuch as an extensive record of the political and military conception of the Orange-Nassau reform movement and notes its importance for troop training, command, garrison warfare, armament and military technology across early modern Europe.

An important scholarly source for the study of the Military Revolution, the Dutch Revolt, Maurice of Nassau, Johann VII of Nassau-Siegen, early modern tactics and the development of European professional armies.

First published in Wiesbaden in 1973 as Volume 20 of Veröffentlichungen der Historischen Kommission für Nassau. Pagination: XVI preliminary pages, a 54-page scholarly introduction and 786 pages of edited source material.
