A scholarly examination of the political, military, diplomatic and cultural relationship between Scotland and Sweden during a transformative period in northern European history. Alexia Grosjean explores the development of a largely informal alliance between the two kingdoms from the late sixteenth century through the reigns of Gustavus Adolphus, Queen Christina and the Stuart monarchs.

Drawing extensively on archival research in both Scotland and Scandinavia, the study investigates Scottish military service in Sweden, migration, diplomacy, commerce and the wider cultural exchange that linked the two nations during the Thirty Years' War and related conflicts. Particular attention is paid to the role of Scottish officers and soldiers in Swedish service and to the influence of these connections on political developments in both countries.

Published as part of Brill's respected Northern World series, this remains an important reference work for historians of early modern Europe, Scandinavian history, Scottish history and military affairs in the seventeenth century.
