Jon Toohey
Jon Toohey was born in Durban and graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Like many South Africans he has mixed ancestry including some he can trace directly back to the very first European settlers in the Cape who arrived in the 1650's. Descendants of whom would later take part in the Great Trek settling in the Umvoti area just north of Durban. Other ancestors were more recent arrivals from Ireland moving to Natal just after the Anglo Boer war. Jon was a member of the South African Military Medal Society for many years when meetings were held in the Johannesburg Public Library with the likes of Don Forsyth, Henk Loots and Peter Digby present. He has also been a member of the Orders & Medals Research Society since 1981.
