General Sir Martin Farndale
General Sir Martin Farndale (1929–2000) was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1948. He commanded 1 RHA and then rose to high rank as successively GOC 2nd Armoured Division, GOC 1 British Corps and CinC BAOR, as well as being commander of NORTHAG. Working at the MOD, he organised the disarming of guerrillas to help the creation of the new nation of Zimbabwe. He was Master Gunner from 1988 to 1996 and founded the annual regimental Alamein Dinner. His historical work on the Royal Artillery in the twentieth century in four volumes showed how much his regiment contributed to victory in two World Wars. It has led the way to further volumes now in preparation.
