Tudor Warfare Conference

Saturday 16th September 2023- 10am-5pm, The Midlands and Birmingham Institute
The conference will be focused on the armies, soldiers, their clothing, equipment and tactics from 1453 to 1618. We shall also be launching new titles on the day with special offers.
Tickets are £35 per person which includes lunch and drinks during the day.
Conference will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., doors open at 9.30 a.m.

Speakers confirmed so far include:
David Childs- Fighting the French, the long career of the Mary Rose
Following a career in the Royal Navy David Childs left to establish the Leonard Cheshire Chair of Conflict Recovery, at University College Hospital, London, and The National Memorial Arboretum at Lichfield. After ten years planting the latter he became the Development Director of The Mary Rose Trust, responsible for the creation of the new museum. He is the author of a number of books on the Tudor and Stuart navies, including The Warship Mary Rose, and New World, Old Wars (Helion, 2022). He was appointed CBE in 2001 and awarded an Honorary D.Litt by the University of Durham in 2019.
Ninya Mikhaila- Doublets of Defence: 16th century textile armour and arming garments
Ninya Mikhaila established her business making reconstructions of historic costumes for museums and heritage sites in 1994 after gaining a Higher National Diploma in Costume Interpretation at the London College of Fashion. Her clients include Historic Royal Palaces, The Royal Armouries, The National Trust, English Heritage, The National Archives and Gainsborough’s House. Ninya featured in the six-part BBC television series A Stitch in Time, which demonstrated what reconstructing historical clothing can tell us about people in the past. Ninya is one half of The Tudor Tailor, a company specialising in reconstructing, and publishing material on 16th-century dress.
Jonathan Davies – A Tudor Military Revolution
Jonathan Davies read history at Sidney Sussex College before a lifetime career in teaching. He has written widely on a large number of historical topics as well as producing three titles for Helion on Renaissance warfare. He is an archer, a gunner, a trebuchet captain, occasionally a musketeer and a pretty poor swordsman.
Jenn Scott- The sieges of Leith and Haddington
Jenn is an historian, writer and researcher who lives in Edinburgh with her husband and teen. She is primarily interested in the period from the mid -fifteenth to the Jacobite Risings. She is a trustee of the Scottish Battlefields Trust and a keen re-enactor. She has written two (three) books for Helion in addition contributing to edited collections of work on the Jacobite conflicts. She has spent the past twenty years developing her knowledge of the material culture of Scotland and has always been particularly interested in the history of clothing. Jenn has an MA in Politics from the University of Edinburgh and has an MA in Heritage from the University of Surrey.
Simon Miller- A new location for Ceresole 1544
Simon Miller is a long time wargamer and author of the popular ‘To the Strongest’ series of wargames rules.
TJ O’Brien – Les Enfans Perdus: light Infantry during the French Wars of Religion
TJ O’Brien is a part-time historian and writer living in rural North Yorkshire. He gained his Masters in Military History at the University of Leeds. He published his first work ‘One Faith, One Law, One King’ for Helion in 2021. He is a security consultant, sustainability champion, archer and gamer.
