This definitive two-volume set presents the first comprehensive military history of the Salvadoran Civil War (1970–1989)—one of the most violent and politically complex conflicts of the Cold War era in Latin America. Based on official documentation and rigorously cross-referenced sources, and richly illustrated with authentic photographs and custom-drawn colour profiles, this set offers unmatched insight into a war that ravaged a nation for over a decade.

Volume 1: Crisis, Coup and Uprising 1970–1983
This volume explores the political and social crisis that engulfed El Salvador in the 1970s, culminating in the 1980 assassination of Archbishop Óscar Romero and the rise of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). The FMLN launched an armed insurgency in early 1981, quickly seizing control of large rural areas despite brutal repression, scorched-earth tactics, and widespread atrocities by government forces. By 1983, the guerrilla movement had reached the peak of its power, with a growing support base and effective coordination across multiple fronts.
Volume 2: Conflagration 1983–1989
The second volume continues with the shifting dynamics of the war through the mid-1980s. The Salvadoran government—heavily backed by the United States—responded with military offensives, political crackdowns, and clandestine death squads. Despite calls for peace and elections, violence escalated, including high-profile guerrilla attacks on economic and military targets. The FMLN’s “final offensive” in 1989 marked the war’s brutal crescendo. Under increasing international pressure, the conflict eventually ground to an uneasy halt, leaving behind over 75,000 dead, a million displaced, and a deeply scarred nation.
