In June 1942, as Japan sought a decisive victory in the Pacific, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched Operation AL, a bold offensive to seize part of the Aleutian Islands chain in the North Pacific. By occupying Attu and Kiska, Japan aimed to secure its northern flank, threaten Alaska, and forestall possible U.S.–Soviet cooperation against the Empire. Though the simultaneous disaster at Midway shattered Japan’s wider ambitions, its foothold in the Aleutians created alarm in Washington and opened a new front on American soil.

Volume 1 traces the origins and execution of Operation AL—from the carrier strike on Dutch Harbor and the invasions of Attu and Kiska to the U.S. counter-move at Adak in August 1942.
Volume 2 continues the story from late 1942 through the spring of 1943, as the U.S. launched a grinding campaign of air and naval attacks culminating in the Battle of the Komandorski Islands, the brutal land battle for Attu, and the dramatic evacuation of Kiska—the so-called “miracle at Kiska.”

Drawing upon Japanese and American archives, firsthand accounts, and newly uncovered sources, Into the Endless Mist, Volumes 1 & 2 provides the most detailed English-language study of the little-known Aleutian campaign. Richly illustrated with rare photographs and the @War series’ signature colour artworks, it vividly captures one of the Pacific War’s most remote and forgotten struggles.
