It traces the historical origins of the disputes in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and examines how political instability developed into open warfare, causing significant military and civilian casualties.

The book explores the involvement of Soviet and Russian military forces in supporting separatist formations and provides a detailed account of the employment of aircraft, tanks, artillery and naval assets during the fighting. It also considers the wider consequences of the wars, which left both territories outside Georgian control and paved the way for their later annexation by Russia in 2008.
