Winning the throne was only the beginning. Drawing on contemporary English and European
sources, David Grummitt tells the story of how Edward IV fought to secure his crown between 1461
and 1468, tracing a struggle that extended from Northumberland’s castles to Wales, Ireland and the
courts of France and Burgundy.
Towton did not end the Wars of the Roses. Henry VI remained at large, Margaret of Anjou sought foreign intervention, and Lancastrian strongholds continued to defy the new king. Edward’s survival depended on the outcome of sieges, naval expeditions and diplomatic negotiations as much as battles.
The Wars of the Roses, Volume 2: Securing the Crown, 1461–1468 reconstructs these campaigns through close examination of contemporary chronicles, correspondence and administrative records, including manuscript sources in English, French and Burgundian collections. David Grummitt reassesses the northern war, the battles of Hedgeley Moor and Hexham, resistance in Wales and the fall of Harlech, while restoring Ireland and the Channel Islands to the wider history of the struggle. He also examines how armies were raised, equipped and supplied, challenging familiar assumptions about medieval warfare.
The second instalment of a three-volume military history covering 1455–1471, Securing the Crown explains both Edward’s growing authority and the tensions that would drive the Earl of Warwick towards rebellion. Combining detailed campaign analysis with a fresh account of international politics, it will appeal to readers of medieval and military history, battlefield enthusiasts and wargamers.
