The Maturing of the Swiss System, 1400 to 1450 examines how the Swiss developed from mountain ambushers into one of the most effective infantry forces of the fifteenth century, establishing a tactical system that would later become the envy of much of Europe.
Major milestones in this development included the Battles of Stoss (1405), Arbedo (1422) and St. Jakob an der Birs (1444). At Stoss, the Swiss made effective use of the battle axe, while their experience at Arbedo demonstrated the need for long pikes to counter heavily armoured cavalry. During the frequent campaigns and numerous engagements of the Old Zurich War (1439–1450), the Swiss further refined their tactics, developing a system of three highly mobile pike squares capable of operating effectively in both attack and defence.
The Old Zurich War encompassed a remarkable variety of military operations, including naval engagements on the Swiss lakes, the slaughter of the garrison at Greifensee, a lengthy siege of Zurich and the Battle of St. Jakob an der Sihl in 1443. Most remarkable was the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs in 1444, when a small Swiss force confronted a vastly larger French army. Although ultimately annihilated, the Swiss inflicted heavy losses on their opponents and demonstrated a combination of effectiveness, ferocity and tactical skill that earned the admiration of even their enemies.
Drawing almost entirely upon little-used primary sources, The Maturing of the Swiss System, 1400 to 1450 provides the most comprehensive English-language examination of this crucial period in the development of Swiss warfare. It will appeal to anyone interested in medieval warfare, Swiss military history and the development of infantry tactics in late medieval Europe.
