The Falklands/Malvinas War was not only a struggle for political power by the leaders of the combatants, but also a silent clash between the two greatest powers at the time. While the Soviet Union sought to capitalise on the situation to increase its influence in South America, the United States found itself navigating its various military agreements carefully.
Other Latin American countries, although officially obliged to maintain neutrality, ultimately supported one side or the other, according to their own interests. This support did not include sending troops, but it was important and strategic, providing military equipment, logistical support, and information that, in many cases, was decisive for the outcome of the war. There were episodes of aircraft operating bearing markings and registration numbers of other countries, illegal arms deals, simulated sales to a third nation when in fact the destination was one of the countries involved, military operations aimed at assassinating enemy pilots, and even the suspected deployment of a hospital ship to secretly transport weapons.
