From 1954 Paraguay was held in the grip of a Right-wing dictatorship under General Alfredo Stroessner. In the years that followed, a number of opposition groups resorted to armed struggle in order to achieve their aims. Government countermeasures were brutal, with torture and extra-judicial killings being routinely employed.

COIN in Paraguay is the first detailed English-language account of these armed opposition groups, their aims, their structures and their campaigns against the Stroessner government. It also details the ruthless government reaction and the support and opposition of other Latin American governments to the situation in Paraguay at this time. In addition to these conflicts within Paraguay, the 1980 assassination on Paraguayan soil of Anastasio Somoza Debayle, the exiled last dictator of Nicaragua, is examined in detail.

COIN in Paraguay includes over 190 photographs and 18 specially commission full-colour artworks.

"I found this an interesting story of historical events that I was unfamiliar with, a story of a country controlled by a leader who was not afraid to use what many would describe as a vicious and repressive control over his country, in which many people simply 'disappeared'. An interesting addition to this Latin America @ War series, which I continue to enjoy." Robin Buckland, Military Model Scene

"This examination of guerrilla incursions and government counterinsurgency operations contains exemplary detail and makes for fascinating reading." The Historical Miniatures Gaming Society

"Superbly written and full of great photos and maps as well a center section of profiles and other artwork, this book gives the reader an excellent look into what the subtitle calls the 'dirty little wars' in Paraguay during this 25 year period." ModellingMadness.com

"The period black and white photographs are all quite interesting and are well captioned. The color illustrations from Tom Cooper and Anderson Subtil are great." IPMS/USA
