Atlas of the Victorio Campaign 1879-1881 delivers a visual account of the relentless guerrilla campaign pursued by Victorio, leader of the Chihenne Apache for the return of their reservation lands around Ojo Caliente, New Mexico.

Between September 1879 and October 1880, Victorio’s warriors accounted for 78% of the Ninth Cavalry’s Buffalo Soldier fatalities sustained during the post-Civil War Indian Wars. (1866 to 1891), crippled that regiment’s ability to operate in the field for three months and temporarily bankrupted the US Army through his targeting of horses and mules.

Atlas of the Victorio Campaign contains all the new material gathered since the publication of the Victorio Campaign trilogy 2017 and 2019 including new archaeological evidence reinterpreting an ambush near McEvers Ranch in September 1879. The author also finally visited (via mule) the site of one of Victorio’s greatest victories at Massacre Canyon and for the first time gives a coherent account of this battle. Finally, visualisations of the Cuchillo Negro battle, 16 August 1881, have been included for the first time.

Finally, Atlas of the Victorio Campaign combines the existing maps and diagrams from the author’s trilogy of the Victorio Campaign with their accompanying captions. In the trilogy the maps/diagrams were at the centre of each volume, but their captions are listed near the beginning of the book. This Atlas, aside from being a valuable resource in itself, will, in conjunction with the Victorio Campaign trilogy, enhance the reader’s experience of reading these volumes without the distraction of jumping back and forth between the front and middle of these books
