Volume 5 of Air-to-Air Missiles describes the development and fielding of AAMs during the late Cold War, including helicopter-launched AAMs, by NATO and Warsaw Pact countries. Each new missile type and model is described, including development, advantages and disadvantages, production, fielding, service experience, and combat record. A table of characteristics, technical diagrams, and photographs of the weapons and their installation on fighter aircraft are provided. Each missile is also illustrated with a profile line drawing with scale.
The volume is extensively illustrated with period photographs, diagrams, figures and charts, and includes the @War series’ signature colour artworks. All this lends appreciation for the evolution of AAM, both technologically and through combat experience, as supported by this fourth generation of missiles.
