Wings of Iraq: Volumes 1–2 – 2-Book Bundle traces the development and combat history of the Iraqi Air Force from its foundation in 1931 through to the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War in 1980.
Volume 1 covers the Royal Iraqi Air Force from its creation through the Anglo-Iraqi War of 1941, the Palestine War of 1948–1949, the rapid expansion of the 1950s, the 1958 revolution and the growing Soviet influence of the 1960s. It also examines the air force’s role in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and in the political upheavals that brought the Ba’ath Party to power.
Volume 2 continues the story through the 1970s, including Iraqi operations during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, the campaign against the Kurdish insurgency in 1974–1975, and efforts to modernise the force through cooperation with France. It concludes with the events leading to Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Iran and the opening air operations of the Iran-Iraq War.
Richly illustrated throughout, these two volumes provide a detailed and accessible account of one of the Middle East’s most significant, yet often misunderstood, air forces.
