The Beagle Conflict – Volumes 1 & 2 (Bundle)
This bundle combines both volumes of The Beagle Conflict, examining the long-running territorial dispute between Argentina and Chile over the islands at the eastern entrance of the Beagle Channel, one of the southernmost waterways linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Although the islands involved were small and sparsely populated, their strategic importance led to decades of tension between the two nations. The dispute dated back to the late 19th century following the Treaty of Limits, and disagreements over sovereignty and maritime rights led to repeated diplomatic crises and military incidents throughout the 20th century.
Volume 1 explores the origins of the dispute, tracing the history of the conflict from the independence of Argentina and Chile through to the escalating border tensions of the 1970s.
Volume 2 focuses on the dramatic events of 1978 when Argentina launched Operación Soberanía, bringing the two countries to the brink of full-scale war at sea, in the air and on land. It examines the military preparations on both sides, the strategic plans for conflict, and the diplomatic efforts led by the Vatican that ultimately resolved the crisis in 1984.
Illustrated with numerous photographs, maps and specially commissioned colour artworks, this two-volume set provides a detailed account of one of the most dangerous but little-known conflicts in modern South American history.
