Sanctuary Lost – Volumes 1 & 2 (Bundle)
This bundle brings together the first two volumes of Sanctuary Lost, examining the air war fought during Portugal’s colonial conflict in Guinea-Bissau between 1963 and 1974.
During the war for independence in what was then Portuguese Guinea, Portugal relied heavily on the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) to maintain control of the battlefield. For much of the conflict the FAP enjoyed air superiority and became the most important military tool used against the PAIGC guerrilla movement fighting for independence.
The conflict is notable as one of the first wars in which an irregular force successfully deployed surface-to-air missiles against a conventional air force. As the guerrillas improved their air defences, Portuguese aircraft began to suffer unexpected losses, gradually undermining the air advantage on which Portugal’s strategy depended.
Volume 1 introduces the conflict and the early role of Portuguese air power in supporting counter-insurgency operations against the PAIGC.
Volume 2 explores the most intense years of the war, analysing the evolving contest between Portuguese air operations and increasingly capable guerrilla air defences.
Illustrated with numerous photographs and specially commissioned colour artworks, these volumes provide a detailed study of one of the most significant air campaigns of the late colonial era and an important case study in the strengths and limitations of air power in counter-insurgency warfare.
