Flashes in the Dark: Volumes 1–3 – 3-Book Bundle explores the little-known history of covert United States Air Force operations conducted from Argentina during the Cold War, particularly those connected with nuclear intelligence gathering.
Volume 1 traces the origins of these missions from the creation of the USAF in 1947 and the development of systems designed to detect foreign nuclear tests. It examines early operations in Argentina using aircraft including the C-47, C-54 and WB-29, employed to search for uranium deposits and monitor nuclear activity.
Volume 2 continues the story into the 1960s, covering WU-2A and NB-57B missions from Ezeiza Airport and the establishment of a permanent US reconnaissance detachment at El Plumerillo in 1966. It also examines RB-57F operations monitoring French nuclear testing in the South Pacific and places these activities within the wider Cold War context.
Volume 3 follows the exposure and intensification of these clandestine operations from 1968 onwards, including expanded RB-57F and WC-135B missions, growing political instability in Argentina, and the impact of the 1973 coup in neighbouring Chile.
Based on more than twenty years of archival research, photographs and eyewitness testimony, this three-volume set reveals an extraordinary and largely hidden chapter of Cold War aerial reconnaissance and nuclear espionage in Latin America.
