Volume 1 covers the first 25 years of that war, from the outbreak of the insurgency in 1961 to the decisive Battle of Afabet in 1988. Volume 2 continues the story from 1988 onwards, chronicling the fall of the Derg government in 1991, the rise of independent Eritrea, and the subsequent reorganization of Ethiopia’s armed forces in the 1990s. The volume culminates in the first detailed account of the Badme War (1998–2001), a brutal conflict that once again pitted former allies against each other. Illustrated with numerous photographs, detailed maps, and colour profiles, it provides essential insight into the military, political, and human dimensions of the continuing Ethiopian–Eritrean rivalry.
