Save 30% on both volumes of Mark G. Fry’s Armies, Allies and Enemies of the Khmer Empire.

Explore the military world of the Khmer Empire, from its own armed forces to the allies, subject peoples and rivals who shaped its history. Drawing on photographic evidence from Angkor Wat, Bayon and Banteay Chhmar, this two-volume collection uses the temples’ carved military scenes to investigate the armies and warfare of medieval Southeast Asia.

Volume 1: The Khmer Empire and its Army 802–1430 CE examines the organisation, equipment and development of the Khmer armed forces. From royal guards, infantry and archers to cavalry, war elephants and naval forces, it reconstructs the different elements of the army and the support needed to sustain them. Weapons, armour, military dress and banners are explored alongside recruitment, tactics, battlefield formations and siege warfare. The volume also considers how the empire’s agricultural wealth and water-management infrastructure supported its military power.

Volume 2: Allies, Subjects and Enemies of the Khmer Empire places Khmer warfare within its wider regional setting. Drawing on archaeology, inscriptions, contemporary accounts and visual sources, it examines the military forces of Champa, Đại Việt, the Siamese kingdoms, Burma, the Lao principalities, Malay and Indonesian states, Nanzhao and Dali, the Mongols and Yuan China. It explores the changing relationships between these powers, showing how diplomacy, alliances, conquest and conflict influenced the empire’s position in Southeast Asia.

Illustrated with photographs, colour plates, maps and supporting reference material, the collection brings together military analysis and visual reconstruction. Read together, the books offer a detailed view of Khmer military society and the diverse forces it encountered—a rewarding collection for military history readers, wargamers and enthusiasts of medieval Southeast Asia.
